The ProCurve Switch 5300xl series was designed to meet the most demanding networking needs, in either a compact 4- or 8-slot modular form factor. ICMP throttling helps to defeat ICMP denial-of-service attacks. HTTP traffic is secured with Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption to allow access to the browser based management GUI.

Router redundancy (XRRP) allows dynamic backup between two ProCurve Switch 5300xl series devices, to create a highly available environment. The use of optional redundant power supplies enables hot-swapping in case of a power supply failure. Automated device discovery is enabled through the use of IEEE 802.1AB Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP).

Auto-sensing ports allow the ProCurve Switch 5300xl series to automatically detect whether a straight-through or crossover cable is being used. Layer 3 IP routing supports static routes, RIP, RIPv2, and OSPF, all at media speed. Automatic configuration of devices such as IP phones is made possible by the use of LLDP-MED (Media Endpoint Discovery).
